Auto Glossary letter Y

Y-Axis
    The lateral axis around which a vehicle pitches fore and aft.

Y-Block
    The block of a V-type engine having a deep crankcase.

Y-Pipe
    A Y-shaped pipe, such as an exhaust pipe, that merges two passages into one.

Yaw
    The Z-axis.
    The rotation of a vehicle structure around a vertical axis.

Yellow Bumper
    A freshman driver in NASCAR competition. Also known as yellow tail.
    The color of the rear bumper of a first-year driver's car in NASCAR competition.

Yellow Flag
    A signal to drivers that there is a hazard on the track in closed-course racing. Also known as yellow light.

Yellow Light
    A signal to drivers in closed-course racing that there is hazard on the track. Also known as yellow flag.

Yellow Line
    A line that separates the apron from the race track.
    The rev limit of a tachometer before reaching the red line.

Yellow Tail
    A freshman driver in NASCAR competition. Also known as yellow bumper.

Yield Strength
    The amount of force that can be applied to a material before it bends or breaks.

Yoke-Sleeve kit
    A kit that may be used to rebuild the yoke.
