Automotive supplier and tire specialist, Continental, has developed an innovative tire concept that can expand on its own and adjust air pressure throughout the trip.

Tires nicknamed C.A.R.E. (Connected Autonomous Reliable Electrified) has a sensor that generates data about tread depth, possible damage, tire temperature, and tire pressure and continuously evaluates the data. Information collected by these sensors is sent to ContiConnect Live, where one can manage tire conditions remotely.

However, C.A.R.E. tires Continental is equipped with other technology that is not less interesting, which has a centrifugal pump mounted on the wheels. When the vehicle accelerates, the centrifugal force generated in the wheels works on the pump to produce compressed air.

Continental dubbed the technology PressureProof which serves to ensure that tires always have the right air pressure to increase efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. The excess air pressure produced by the centrifugal force will be stored in an integrated tank that can quickly send pressure back to the tire if needed.

Continental has not submitted information when and whether the technology can reach the production line. However, the tire manufacturer states that such tire technology can provide an effective form of tire management for the modern robo-taxi fleet by increasing performance and optimizing costs. Such tires can also help the efficiency of private vehicles that utilize electric power as a driving source and are equipped with autonomous technology.
